Inter-American Development Bank

The Problem

Where people got lost.

The Inter-American Development Bank's website gets more than 100 million views a month. Visitors arrive with clear questions, but the old site was huge and cumbersome, so finding answers took a lot of work. The homepage led with a campaign, and what most visitors wanted sat much further down.

What Visitors Asked

From old-site data and user research.

Data from the old site and user research kept pointing to the same four questions:

Which projects is the bank funding in my country, and how much?

What research and data exist on my country or sector?

Where's the learning material?

How can I work with the bank: jobs, tenders, partnerships?

The Solution

A homepage built around those questions.

The new homepage is organized around what visitors came to do, instead of how the bank is organized. It has three doors: Results, Knowledge and Opportunities. Each one gives a quick summary and leads straight to the right part of the site.

The Projects page works the same way. Pick a country to see total loans and where the money goes. Pick a sector to see active projects, completed projects and financing.

The Platform

From ColdFusion to Drupal.

The site moved from an outdated platform to Drupal, which is open source and easier to maintain, so the team could keep it current and grow it as needs changed. Along the way: 46 full site redesigns and more than 30,000 pages migrated.

Results

How the new site performed.

73% higher user satisfaction

Measured by visitor surveys before and after the redesign.

54% faster page loads

Measured with Lighthouse load-time tests.

21% more engagement

Measured by number of visits and time on site.
